Blogger’s all over the world today are discussing poverty for BlogActionDay. There is so much that can be said about such a deep and persistent social inequality. Many social issues such as poverty are a global problem. But can we solve this epidemic globally without going local first?

It’s easier to donate money to an organization that works with African orphans than to seek out how you can meet local needs for people in your own community who are wrestling with poverty. Please don’t stop donating to organizations who work with African orphans. Don’t stop being involved in global issues. But I wonder if we become hypocrites the moment we try to help the poor while keeping our distance from them.

I love how JESUS spoke of the poor and marginalized of society, so long ago on the dusty roads of Israel, it was clear that He identified himself so closely with them in a way that many of us do not:

“…When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, (Mat 25:36) and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in jail, you visited me.” (Mat 25:37) Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, “When did we give you something to eat or drink? (Mat 25:38) When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear (Mat 25:39) or visit you while you were sick or in jail?” (Mat 25:40) The king will answer, “Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.”(CEV translation)

Even more for us in the affluent West, is it possible for us to pause our upward mobility long enough to look around at the poor in our local communities to find not only the face of JESUS, but even our own faces.

Consider: poverty is a global issue. We must be involved and aware of global issues regarding the poor. My challenge though for us all is one of re-personalizing and re-localizing poverty through our personal involvement. It’s no longer enough to write a check and walk to the mailbox (although, again, I’m not saying you should stop doing that). The challenge is waiting for us in our own backyards.

____________________________________________________________________

Get your hands in the dirt to feed the poor here: www.EndHunger.org

Listen to Derek Webb’s hard-hitting song about faith, affluence, and the spiritual call to give yourself to the poor:

Lately…alright, for several months it seems I’ve made no effort to post anything here. But, nonetheless, we have been communicating online. Instead of blogging, we’ve been engaged in the extreme sport of microblogging on Twitter and overall exploring the realm of social media more fully.

If you are on Twitter check us out! If you’re not, stay tuned. We’ll be back in the blogging saddle on a more regular basis.

Make no mistake, the social media arena is rapidly expanding. There are more tools to communicate online now than there ever was. Having a website alone is no longer enough to connect with a hyper-engaged audience.

The question is: how do you juggle so many soapboxes at once?

Born in obscurity, often nurtured from near fatality, great stories spring up in the flash of an instant. That homeless story, like a lost bird, finds it’s home, silently, without warning and begs to be taken in.

Andy Horner, creator of the independent graphic novel series, Light Children, knows a thing or two about bringing a story in to roost and then bringing it to flight.

“During college in the mid 90’s, I was on a road trip in Virginia with some college mates. A bit tired of driving, we pulled off at a tourist stop. The specific nature of that place provided the inspiration for Light Children. The keel of the story popped into my head in that instant…”

Vigorously marketing the series online and at comic book conventions, Andy and teammate, artist Kyle T. Webster, have brought the world of the Allumen to life with a view for an entire series.

“There are three parts to the story, but each part includes several books.”

Book One is titled ‘The Invalid’, which introduces the wild and desolate world of the Allumen. The main characters, a band of orphaned friends, whose stories converge into a flight from the orphanage, are bound together in a journey to save their friend Eli and possibly even their own lives from an unforeseen menace.

With beautiful, raw imagery, the earthtone, textured illustrations and straightforward character dialogues launch you right into the story with minimal introduction. With the Light Children website setting the foundation for the book, if you’ve sampled any of the online content you already have a general feel for the overall storyline. This is a feat that was not possible years ago. In years past, a story had to grow purely in print. Today, the world of the Allumen and our small band of orphans are being slowly revealed in tandem, both online and in the physical graphic novels. Whether this double production continues remains to be seen, but it certainly could be a viable reality in this age of multi-channel story delivery.

Overall, as I mentioned in the pre-review, the story is reminiscent of the gifted and youthful anti-heroes of the X-MEN, while maintaining the medieval, yet otherworldy characteristics of Tolkiens’ Middle Earth. It is an intense emotional tale of friendship and survival backdropped in the dark environs of a fantasy world. It classically presents an archtypal story: the elders as deceptive yet well meaning (or are they?), while the main characters come together in crisis to both face a great evil and find their way in the world. All the while. a parabolic underpinning gives you a sense that maybe this story is more about us than it is about the struggle for survival in the world of the Allumen.

Satisfied with the initial offering, my only complaint is that after reading it through I was left with an undeniable burning for more. Alas, infected with the author’s original fever.

After watching the CurrentTV video “The Future of Media In 2008″, Nahum Gershon over at SOCIOSPHERE.NET asks: “So, are the traditional media of newspapers, TV & radio going to really disappear?”

It’s apparent that Social Media truly is altering the cultural landscape. The real question is: “Who will control the content?”. I envision one possibility (for the future of media) resembling the world of Max Headroom, where independent media producers are fighting for ‘air-time’ against an all encompassing, corporate-controlled network. In the world of cross-market mergers and ‘Googlebleed’ is this really so far fetched?

As Social Media matures and traditional media evolves old forms will bite the dust and be reborn through the new forms. As with the advent of TV and the survival of radio alongside the new technology, these new technologies will coexist and mingle with the old for a time. And then the power struggle will begin.

In the midst of all this technological and cultural change, I say we all brush up on Neil Postman as we get closer and closer to facing media convergence and the centralizing of decentralized media channels.
